Officer Reginald “Jake” Gutierrez, 45

Tacoma Washington Police Department

November 30, 2016 – Officer Reginald “Jake” Gutierrez was shot and killed after responding to a domestic disturbance call. After shooting Officer Gutierrez, the suspect barricaded himself inside the house where he used two young children as human shields until a SWAT sniper was able to terminate the threat.

Trooper Cody James Donahue, 34

Colorado State Patrol

November 25, 2015 – Trooper Cody Donahue was struck and killed by a vehicle while investigating a traffic crash. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Officer Collin Rose, 29

Wayne State University Police Department, Michigan

November 23, 2016 – Officer Collin Rose died as a result of a gunshot wound to the head sustained the previous day. He’d made contact with a suspicious suspect and was attempting to detain him when the man pulled out a gun and fired.

Trooper Eric Ellsworth, 32

Utah Highway Patrol

November 22, 2016 – On November 18, 2016, Trooper Eric Ellsworth was at the scene of a downed power line where he attempted to warn a semi truck to prevent it from striking the live wire. As he stepped into the roadway to signal the truck driver, he was struck from behind by a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. Trooper Ellsworth succumbed to his injuries four days later. He is survived by his wife, four sons, and his parents.

Deputy Sheriff Eric Oliver, 32

Nassau County Florida Sheriff’s Office

November 22, 2016 – Deputy Eric Oliver was struck and killed by a vehicle while involved in a foot pursuit. He is survived by his wife and six-year-old daughter.

Detective Benjamin Edward Marconi, 50

San Antonio Texas Police Department

November 20, 2016 – Detective Benjamin Edward Marconi was killed by ambush while conducting a traffic stop. He was sitting inside his patrol car writing a summons when a suspect walked up to the passenger side window and shot him once in the head. The man then leaned inside the car and shot him again.

Detective Marconi is survived by his two children.

Deputy Commander Patrick Carothers, 53

United States Marshals Service

November 18, 2016 – Deputy Commander Patrick Carothers was shot and killed as he and members of a task force attempted to serve a warrant on a man who was wanted for attempted murder of police officers, domestic violence, and weapons violations.

Deputy Commander Carothers is survived by his wife and five children.

Border Patrol Agent David Gomez, 44

Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection

November 16, 2016 – Agent David Gomez suffered a fatal heart attack while on bike patrol in Texas. He is survived by his wife, three children, parents, and two brothers.

Assistant Commander Kenneth Joseph Starrs, 66

South Texas Specialized Crimes and Narcotics Task Force

November 16, 2016 – Assistant Commander Kenneth Starrs was killed when his department vehicle was struck by a Union Pacific freight train.

He is survived by his wife, daughter, two grandchildren, and sister.

Deputy Sheriff Dennis Wallace, 53

Stanislaus County California Sheriff’s Office

November 13, 2017 – Deputy Dennis Wallace was shot and killed at point blank range while investigating the driver of a stolen vehicle. It was determined that he’d been shot twice in the head. The killer was arrested later in the day after attempting to steal a woman’s purse.

Deputy Wallace is survived by his wife and children.

Deputy Sheriff Justin White, 28

Newton County Georgia Sheriff’s Office

November 15, 2017 – Deputy Justin White was injured in a vehicle crash on October 30, 2017, while responding to assist at a medical call. He died as a result of those injuries on November 15, 2017.

Deputy White is survived by his daughter and girlfriend.

Update – Since I posted this earlier today, another officer was shot to death. Therefore:

123 124 line of duty deaths so far this year, an 8% 9% increase over this time last year.

Of those 124 deaths, 56 57 officers were killed by gunfire, a 65% 68% increase.

49 officers died in auto-related incidents, including those were were intentionally struck, an 11% increase.

Officer Scott Leslie Bashioum, 52

Canonsburg Borough Pennsylvania Police Department

November 10, 2016 – Officer Scott Leslie Bashioum was shot and killed by ambush after responding to a domestic dispute call. His partner was also shot and was flown to a hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

Officer Bashioum is survived by his wife and children.

Officer Darrin Reed, 50

Show Low Arizona Police Department

November 8, 2016 – Officer Darrin Reed was shot and killed after responding to a suspicious person call. The shooter fled the scene and then took a teenager hostage and barricaded himself and the teen inside a cabin,where he engaged in a shootout with police. The suspect was killed during the exchange of gunfire.

Officer Reed is survived by his wife and two children.

Sergeant Patrick Sondron, 41

Peach County Georgia Sheriff’s Office

November 6, 2016 – Sergeant Patrick Sondron was shot and killed while walking up a driveway to answer a call regarding a dispute between neighbors. A second deputy, Daryl Smallwood, was also shot. The suspect engaged in a shootout with other officers and was wounded during the exchange of gunfire. He was taken into custody at that time.

Deputy Daryl Smallwood, 39

Peach County Georgia Sheriff’s Office

November 8, 2016 – On November 6, 2016, Deputy Daryl Smallwood, along with Sergeant Patrick Sondron, was shot while walking up a driveway to answer a call regarding a dispute between neighbors. Deputy Smallwood succumbed to his injuries two days later. Sergeant Sondron died the day of the ambush.

The suspect engaged in a shootout with other officers and was wounded during the exchange of gunfire. He was taken into custody at that time.

Officer Cody Brotherson, 25

West Valley City Utah Police Department

November 6, 2016 – Officer Cody Brotherson was intentionally struck and killed by a stolen vehicle being pursued by police officers. As Officer Brotherson and other officers attempted to deploy stop sticks, the driver of the stolen vehicle veered toward them and struck Officer Brotherson, killing him.

Officer Brotherson is survived by his parents, two brothers, and his fiancee.

Sergeant Paul Tuozzolo, 41

New York City Police Department

November 4, 2016 – Sergeant Paul Tuozzolo was shot and killed after locating a suspect who committed a home invasion robbery. As Sergeant Tuozzolo approached, the suspect opened fire shooting him in the head. A second sergeant at the scene was also shot but survived.

Sergeant Tuozzolo leaves behind his wife and two young sons.

November 2, 2016 – Officer Justin Martin was shot and killed by ambush. He was sitting in his patrol car at an intersection when a suspect approached and fired 15-30 rounds into the car.

November 2, 2016 – Sergeant Anthony Beminio was shot and killed by ambush. He was sitting in his patrol car at an intersection when a suspect approached and fired 15-30 rounds into the car.

Rusk County Wisconsin Sheriff’s Office

October 29, 2016 – Deputy Dan Glaze was shot and killed while investigating a suspicious vehicle.

Fairbanks Alaska Police Department

October 28, 2016 – Sergeant Allen Brandt died as a result of gunshot wounds he sustained a few days earlier when he pulled his car over to approach a pedestrian. As he approached, the man opened fire striking Sergeant Brandt five times. Once shot, he fell to the ground where the suspect then kicked him in the head and stole his weapon and patrol car.

Sergeant Brandt is survived by his wife and four children.

Officer Myron Jarrett, 40

Detroit Michigan Police Department

October 28, 2016 – Officer Myron Jarrett was struck and killed while assisting other officers during a traffic stop. A van traveling at a high rate of speed struck Officer Jarrett as he prepared to enter his patrol car. The van stopped but the driver and female passenger then fled on foot.

Officer Jorge Sanchez, 53

Miami Florida Police Department

October 31, 2016 – Officer Jorge Sanchez was killed when his motorcycle was struck from behind while stopped at an intersection. The driver of the vehicle also struck several other cars.

Officer Sanchez is survived by his three children, mother, and fiancee.

Sergeant Rod Lucas, 46

Fresno County California Sheriff’s Office

October 31, 2016 – Sergeant Rod Lucas was accidentally shot and killed when another detective’s weapon discharged inside their office. Ironically, they’d been discussing the safety of backup weapons at the time of the shooting.

Sergeant Lucas is survived by his wife and four children.

Taylor County Florida Sheriff’s Office

October 31, 2016 – Deputy Scott Williams was killed when his patrol car collided with a logging truck.

Officer James Brockmeyer, 22

Chester Illinois Police Department

October 28, 2016 – Officer James Brockmeyer was killed in a car crash while pursuing a vehicle. The vehicle he’d been pursuing continued to flee.

Officer Brockmeyer is survived by his parents and sister.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department

October 24, 2016 – Sergeant Alphonso Lopez suffered a fatal heart attack while responding to assist in a high-speed pursuit. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Trooper Timothy P. Pratt, 55

New York State Police

October 26, 2016 – Trooper Timothy Pratt was struck and killed by a vehicle while assisting a motorist who was lost. He is survived by his three children and fiancee.

Deputy Sheriff Jack Hopkins, 31

Modoc County California Sheriff’s Office

October 19, 2016 – Deputy Jack Hopkins was shot and killed shortly after responding to a domestic disturbance call. The suspect, a registered sex offender, fled the scene and was later wounded in a shootout with police.

Deputy Hopkins is survived by a large family and his dog, Bandit.

Remember, this total includes only the officers who died as a result of their wounds. The number does not include the numerous officers who’ve been shot but were fortunate to have survived.

Officer Lesley Zerebny, 27

Palm Springs California Police Department

October 8, 2016 – Officer Lesley Zerebny was shot and killed after responding to a domestic disturbance. The suspect, a known gang member, fired at officers through a closed door after telling family members he wanted to shoot police officers.

Officer Zerebny is survived by her husband and her four-month-old child.

Officer Gil Vega, 63

Palm Springs California Police Department

October 8, 2016 – Officer Gil Vega was shot and killed after responding to a domestic disturbance. The suspect, a known gang member, fired at officers through a closed door after telling family members he wanted to shoot police officers.

Officer Vega is survived by his wife and eight children. He was scheduled to retire in two months, after serving 35 years as a police officer.

Officer Blake Snyder, 33

St. Louis County Missouri Police Department

October 6, 2016 – Officer Blake Snyder was shot and killed while responding to a disturbance call. When he and another officer arrived on scene gunfire immediately erupted. The suspect likely ambushed the officers.

Officer Snyder is survived by his wife and two-year-old son.

Sergeant Steve Owen, 53

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office

October 5, 2016 – Sergeant Steve Owen was shot and killed while responding to a burglary call.

L.A. County Sheriff Jim McDonnell said the gunman executed Sergeant Owen by first wounding him and then standing over him to fire four additional rounds into his body before an unsuccessful try to steal the sergeant’s weapon with the intention to use it to kill another deputy. The suspect then attempted to steal a patrol car, ramming it into a second patrol vehicle before fleeing on foot. He was captured a short distance away.

Sergeant Owen is survived by his wife and two children.

Agent Victor Rosada-Rosa, 55

Puerto Rico Police Department

October 5, 2016 – Agent Victor Rosada-Rosa was killed when his motorcycle was struck by a vehicle after a pursuit of a fleeing larceny suspect. It was at the traffic stop when a vehicle struck the agent’s motorcycle from the rear.

Agent Rosada-Rosa is survived by his wife and two sons.

Jailer Robert E. Ransom, 62

Gregg County Texas Sheriff’s Office

September 30, 2016 – Jailer Robert E. Ransom, a 36-year veteran, suffered a fatal cardiac event while assisting an inmate who had suffered a medical emergency. Jailer Ransom was rushing to retrieve a defibrillator to revive the prisoner when he collapsed.

September 23, 2016 – Agent Edwin Pabón-Robles was killed in a vehicle crash while responding to an emergency call. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office

September 28, 2017 – Deputy Sheriff John Isenhour was struck and killed while standing at the entrance to a local park. He was working a cycling event at the time.

Deputy Isenhour is survived by his wife and children.
