Officer Tim Bracken, 38

Shelby North Carolina Police Department

September 12, 2016 – Officer Tim Bracken was shot multiple times while searching for a suspect who was wanted for weapons and drug charges, kidnapping and armed robbery . Officer Bracken died as a result of his injuries. He is survived by his wife and daughter.

Master Deputy Brandon Collins, 45

Johnson County Kansas Sheriff’s Office

September 11, 2017 – Master Deputy Brandon Collins was killed during a traffic stop when a truck struck his patrol car from behind, causing it to burst into flames. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Trooper Kenneth Velez, 48

Ohio State Highway Patrol

September 15, 2017 – Trooper Kenneth Valez was killed when a vehicle struck him during a traffic stop. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Officer Robert Aaron Barker, 26

McCrory Arkansas Police Department

September  15, 2016 – Officer Robert Aaron McCrory was killed in a vehicle crash while responding to assist sheriff’s deputies.

 

Officer Leander Frank

Navajo Division of Public Safety, Tribal Police

August 30, 2016 – Officer Leander Frank was killed in a head-on crash while responding to a call.

Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye has ordered all flags in Chinle to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset Saturday in memory of Officer Frank.

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey ordered all flags to fly at half staff on Wednesday and again on Saturday, the day of Officer Frank’s interment.

Officer Jonathan M. DeGuzman, 43

San Diego California Police Department

July 28, 2016 – Officer Jonathan DeGuzman was killed—shot five times—after he and his partner approached a suspicious subject. Officer Guzman’s partner was also wounded during the gunfire, but survived.

Officer DeGuzman is survived by his wife and two children.

Sergeant Shawn Miller, 47 

West Des Moines Iowa Police Department

August 3, 2016 – Sergeant Shawn Miller was killed in a motorcycle crash when a car turned in front of him at an intersection. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Officer Justin Scherlen, 39

Amarillo Texas Police Department

August 4, 2016 – Officer Justin Scherlen died as a result of injuries sustained in a head-on collision. He is survived by his wife and four children.

Special Agent De’Greaun Frazier, 35

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation

August 9, 2016 – Special Agent De’Greaun Frazier was killed when he was shot in the back during an undercover narcotics operation. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Corporal Bill Cooper, 65

Sebastian County Arkansas Sheriff’s Office

August 10, 2016 – Corporal Bill Cooper was shot and killed while responding to a domestic call. The shooter opened fire, with a rifle, as the officers approached the residence. The chief of the Hackett Police Department was also wounded during the gunfire, as was a police K-9. They both survived.

Border Patrol Agent Manuel Alvarez, 37

U.S. Department of Homeland Security—Customs and Border Protection

August 11, 2011 – Agent Manuel Alvarez was killed in a motorcycle crash while patrolling rugged terrain on the Tohono O’Odham Nation Reservation. He is survived by his wife and four children.

Officer Jose Chavez, 33

Hatch New Mexico Police Department

August 12, 2016 – Officer Jose Chavez was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop. The two shooters were wanted for murder in Ohio. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Officer Timothy Keven Smith, 30

Eastman Georgia Police Department

August 13, 2016 – Officer Timothy Kevin Smith was shot and killed while responding to a “man with a gun” call. The suspect opened fire the moment Officer Smith approached.

Officer Smith is survived by his three children, two stepchildren, parents, fiancee, and three siblings.

Officer Shannon Brown, 40

Fenton Louisiana Police Department

August 13, 2016 – Officer Shannon Brown died as a result of injuries he sustained when a vehicle struck his patrol car during a traffic stop. He was seated inside his car writing a traffic summons when the crash occurred.

Officer Anthony Marcos Zarate, 52

Bellaire Texas Police Department

July 12, 2016 – Officer Anthony Karate was killed in a motorcycle crash while in pursuit of a vehicle.

He is survived by his wife and three daughters.

Berrien County Michigan Trial Court

July 11, 2016 – Court Officer Ron Kuienzle was shot and killed by an inmate who was attempting to escape custody.

Security Supervisor Joe Zangaro, 61

Berrien County Michigan Trial Court

July 11, 2016 – Security Supervisor Joe Zangaro was shot and killed by an inmate who was attempting to escape custody.

Public Safety Officer Michael Ventura, 33

Town of Salem Wisconsin Department of Public Safety

July 8, 2016 – Public Safety Officer Michael Ventura was killed in an auto crash while responding to a call.

Officer Brent Alan Thompson, 43

Dallas Area Rapid Transit Police Department

July 7, 2016 – Officer Brent Alan Thompson was shot and killed by an active shooter/sniper while providing security for a black lives matter protest in downtown Dallas. The suspect stated he specifically targeted white police officers.

Officer Thompson is survived by his wife, daughter, and granddaughter. His wife also serves as an officer with DART.

Officer Patrick E. Zamarripa, 32

Dallas Texas Police Department

July 7, 2016 – Patrick E. Zamarripa was shot and killed by an active shooter/sniper while providing security for a black lives matter protest in downtown Dallas. The suspect stated he specifically targeted white police officers.

Officer Zamarripa is survived by his wife, two-year-old daughter, and stepson.

Sergeant Michael Smith, 55

Dallas Texas Police Department

July 7, 2016 – Sergeant Michael Smith was shot and killed by an active shooter/sniper while providing security for a black lives matter protest in downtown Dallas. The suspect stated he specifically targeted white police officers.

Sergeant Smith is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Officer Michael Leslie Krol, 40

July 7, 2016 – Officer Michael Leslie Krol was shot and killed by an active shooter/sniper while providing security for a black lives matter protest in downtown Dallas. The suspect stated he specifically targeted white police officers.

Senior Corporal Lorne Ahrens, 48

Dallas Texas Police Department

Senior Corporal Lorne Ahrens was shot and killed by an active shooter/sniper while providing security for a black lives matter protest in downtown Dallas. The suspect stated he specifically targeted white police officers.

Corporal Aherns is survived by his wife and two children. His wife also serves with the Dallas Police Department.

Deputy Sheriff Paul Clark, 55

St. Francois County Missouri Sheriff’s Office

July 4, 2016 – Deputy Sheriff Paul Clark died after being struck by a stolen vehicle. The driver, a wanted felon, stole a truck and intentionally struck Deputy Clark while attempting to escape custody. He was later captured after a pursuit with other officers.

Deputy Clark is survived by his wife, two children, and grandchildren.

Sergeant David Kyle Elahi, 28

Sterlington Louisiana Police Department

Sergeant David Elahi was struck and killed by a drunk driver while conducting a traffic stop. Two other officers who were at the scene were also struck and were transported to the hospital with injuries.

Sergeant Elahi is survived by his expectant fiancee and one child.

Deputy Sheriff Tase Sturgill, 49

Humphries County Tennessee Sheriff’s Office

Deputy Sheriff Tase Sturgill suffered a fatal heart attack after completing a run during a training exercise. He is survived by his wife and four children.
