February 20, 2017 – Officer Keith Boyer was shot and killed while investigating a traffic crash. The shooter, the driver of the vehicle involved in the crash, was recently released on parole and had just murdered another person a few hours earlier. Another officer was wounded during the exchange of gunfire. The suspect was also wounded.

Officer Boyer is survived by his three adult children and his parents.

Goldsboro North Carolina Police Department

February 16, 2017 – Major Jay R. Memmelaar suffered a fatal heart attack while participating in department physical fitness training. He is survived by his wife and two children.

California Highway Patrol

February 22, 2017 – Officer Lucas Chellew was killed in a motorcycle crash while in pursuit of another motorcycle. He is survived by his wife, daughter, son, a sister, and his parents. His father is a retired CHP officer. His sister also works for the department.

February 23, 2017 – Deputy Michael Foley was struck and killed by a prisoner transport bus. He was a 37-year law enforcement veteran.

February 5, 2017 – Sergeant Greg Meagher died after being exposed to liquid nitrogen while rescuing an unconscious woman at a medical facility. She, too, had been overcome by fumes. Three other deputies were treated for exposure and survived.

February 2, 2017 Officer Eric Mumaw drowned in swift water while attempting to rescue a suicidal woman. Other officers attempted to save him but the freezing water temperature and strong current prevented them from reaching him.

January 30, 2017 – Deputy Chief James Molloy died of brain cancer he contracted as a direct result of inhaling toxic materials during the rescue and recovery attempts at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2011.

Seventy-two officers died on 9-11 while trying to save the lives of others.

Chief Molloy is survived by his wife and daughters.

January 24, 2017 – Officer Nathan Graves was killed when his patrol vehicle was struck head-on by a car that was attempting to pass another vehicle.

Officer Graves is survived by his wife and children.

January 20, 2017 – Officer Michael Louviere was shot and killed when he stopped to help the victims of a vehicle crash. While assisting an injured female, a male suspect came from behind and shot the officer in the back of the head, killing him. The suspect then shot the injured woman and fled. He remains at large.

Officer Louviere is survived by his wife, four-year-old daughter, and 1-year-old son.

January 18, 2017 – Deputy Colt Eugene Allery was shot and killed after the pursuit of a stolen vehicle. At the termination of the pursuit, the driver of the stolen car began firing at officers, killing Deputy Allery. The suspect was also killed in the shootout.

January 17, 2017 – Detective Jerry Walker was shot and killed after responding to a call regarding a man with a gun. The suspect fired from a window, striking the detective in the neck.

Detective Walker is survived by his wife and four children.

January 19, 2017 – Officer Raymond Murrell was killed in a car crash while responding to a felony in progress.

January 9, 2017 – Master Sergeant Debra Clayton was shot and killed when she encountered and attempted to apprehend a suspect wanted for the murder of his pregnant girlfriend. The suspect later carjacked a vehicle and shot another officer as he attempted to apprehend him. He is still at large.

Sergeant Clayton is survived by her husband and son.

January 9, 2017 – Deputy Norman Lewis was killed in a motorcycle crash when a car turned in front of him during the frantic search for the suspect who shot and killed Sergeant Debra Clayton.

January 7, 2017 – Detective Chad Parque succumbed to injuries sustained in a vehicle crash when his patrol car was struck head-on by a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction in his lane. He is survived by his wife, children, and siblings.

January 10, 2017 – Chief Randy Gibson died from respiratory arrest following a struggle with a violent suspect. He is survived by his wife.

New York City Police Department

January 10, 2017 – Detective Steven McDonald died as a result of gunshot wounds he received 31 years ago when he encountered a teen robbery suspect. While questioning the teen, the young man drew a handgun and shot Detective McDonald in the head and neck. He’d been paralyzed since the shooting, and was confined to the use of a wheelchair and a machine to assist with breathing.

Detective McDonald is survived by his wife and son. His son is now a sergeant with the NYPD.

In 2016, 138 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty.

Over 60 officers were shot to death.

Of the officers who were shot to death, over 20 were killed in ambush attacks. These men and women, fathers, sons, mothers, daughters, brothers and sisters, were murdered simply because they wore a uniform.

Each of these brave officers died while protecting and serving the citizens of their communities.

Finally, it is important to note that these numbers do not reflect the huge number of assaults and attacks on police officers that occur each day.

Assaults against officers number in the tens of thousands. For example, in 2015, 50,212 assaults on police officers were reported. 14,281 officers sustained injuries as a result of those attacks. 79 percent of the officers who were assaulted in the line of duty were attacked with personal weapons.

There is no cause to believe the number of assaults has reduced in 2016. Instead, there’s good reason to believe the number is higher.

December 19, 2017 – Officer Lisa Mauldin was attacked and killed by an inmate. A second female officer was also attacked, but she is expected to survive her injuries. The incident was captured on video, therefore the suspect was identified. He has been charged with capital murder and battery.

December 7, 2016 – Officer Nicholas Ryan Smarr responded to a domestic call where he and Officer Jody Smith of Georgia Southwestern University Police Department were shot as they approached. Officer Smarr died at the scene. Officer Smith was flown to a hospital in Macon, Ga., where he died the following day.

December 7, 2016 – Officer Jody Smith responded, as backup, to a domestic call where he and Officer Nicholas Smarr, of the Americus Police Department, were shot. Officer Smith was flown to a hospital in Macon, Ga., where he died the next day, December 8, 2016. Officer Smarr died at the scene.

December 5, 2016 – Trooper Frankie Williams was killed when, while responding to a call, a car traveling in the opposite direction crossed the centerline and struck his patrol car head-on.
