Trooper Marc Castellano, 29

New Jersey State Police

June 6, 2010 – Trooper Marc Castellano was struck by a vehicle and killed while attempting to locate the occupants of an abandoned vehicle beside Highway 195. The female driver of the abandoned car, Diana Hoffman, had been involved in a police pursuit and was later found hiding in the woods. She told officers that she had been with an armed man who’d fled the scene on foot. After an intensive search by law enforcement it was determined that the woman had lied about the man. She was taken into custody and charged with several offenses.

Officer Joshua Yazzi, 33

United States Department of the Interior – Bureau of Indian Affairs

June 7, 2010 – Officer Joshua Yazzi was killed while responding to assist an ambulance crew with a violent, intoxicated patient. He lost control of his patrol car in a curve causing it to roll over several times before tumbling down a 200 foot embankment. Officer Yazzi was ejected from the car and died at the scene.  He is survived by his wife Jessica and two children, Jaxsen and MaCee.

Trooper Wesley Brown, 24

Maryland State Police

June 11, 2010 – Trooper Wesley Brown was shot and killed while working off-duty security at a Forestville Applebee’s restaurant. He’d escorted a disorderly patron from the business early in the evening. Later, that same patron was hiding in the parking lot and shot Trooper Wesley as he was leaving the restaurant. The suspect is still at large.

Trooper Wesley is survived by his fiancee.

Officer Tauveve Vivao, 42

United States Department of Defense – Marine Corps Base Hawaii

May 11, 2010 – Officer Tauveve Vivao suffered a fatal heart attack during routine physical fitness training. He is survived by his wife and eight children.

Trooper Patrick Ambroise, 35

Florida Highway Patrol

May 15, 2010 – Trooper Patrick Ambroise was killed when a car veered off the road and struck his parked patrol car, trapping him inside. Trooper Ambroise’s vehicle burst into flames upon impact.

He leaves behind his wife, two young daughters, mother, and five siblings.

Officer Eydelmen Mani, 30

Houston Texas Police Department

May 18, 2010 – Officer Eydelman Mani was responding to a call when his patrol car struck a guardrail and overturned. Officer Mani was killed in the accident. He is survived by his wife and three-year-old son.

Officer Bill Evans

West Memphis Arkansas Police Department

Sergeant Brandon Paudert, 39

West Memphis Arkansas Police Department

May 20, 2010 – Sergeant Brandon Paudert, son of Police Chief Bob Paudert, and Officer Bill Evans were shot and killed during a traffic stop shortly before noon on I-40. The suspects fled the scene but were located by officers in a nearby Walmart parking lot, where a second shootout took place. Crittenden County Sheriff Dick Busby and Chief Deputy W.A. Wren were both seriously wounded in that exchange of gunfire. The two suspects were killed.

Paudert and Evans had been assigned to the drug interdiction unit.

Sergeant Paudert is survived by his three children.

Officer Evans is survived by his two children.

** UPDATE **

The two suspects in the shooting death of officers Paudert and Evans were driving a van registered to the House of God’s Prayer, a church with connections to the Jesus Christ Christian Church once led by a self-proclaimed white supremacist. That Aryan Nation church and its leader Ray Redfairn made headlines 13 years ago.

The suspects, Jerry Kane, 45, and his 16-year-old son Joseph had been traveling the country holding seminars on debt consolidation and foreclosure rescue that were heavy on anti-government sentiment.

Pilot Officer Danny Benavides, 39

California Highway Patrol

May 7, 2010 – Officer Danny Benavides was flying to the Sand Diego-Imperial County line for speed control monitoring when the CHP’s communication center lost radio contact with him. A search team found the officer’s downed plane in a rugged mountain area of the desert. Officer Benavides leaves behind his wife and daughter.

Deputy Brian Lamar Mahaffey, 28

Rockdale County Georgia Sheriff’s Office

May 8, 2010 – Deputy Brian Mahaffey was killed one day after his birthday as he and a team of officers attempted to serve a warrant on a man wanted for rape, assault, and kidnapping. The deputies were searching the suspect’s home when he opened fire from inside a closet. Deputy Mahaffey was shot just below his vest. The suspect was killed by return fire.

Sergeant Franco Aguila, 36

Sevier County Utah Sheriff’s Office

April 29, 2010 – Sergeant Franco Aquila was working an accident on a bridge when the driver of an SUV lost control and slid into the car that had been involved in the original crash. During the accident with the out-of-control SUV, Sergeant Aquila fell 250 feet to his death. It’s not clear if he’d been forced off the bridge, or had attempted to jump out of the way of the careening SUV. Sergeant Aquila leaves behind his wife, five children, three brothers, and his parents.

Constable John W. Brown, 63

Calhoun County Texas Constable’s Office – Precinct 5

April 10, 2010 – Constable John W. Brown suffered a heart attack while struggling with a criminal suspect. Efforts by fellow officers to revive Constable Brown were unsuccessful and he passed away after arriving at the hospital. He leaves behind his wife and brother. The Constable’s body was to be cremated and the ashed returned to the Philippines where he and his wife had first met.

Sergeant Joseph Bergeron, 49

Maplewood Minnesota Police Department

May 1, 2010 – Sergeant Burgeron was shot and killed while attempting to question two men about a carjacking. The men opened fire as the sergeant approached them. A passerby used the sergeant’s radio to summon assistance. Several hours later Officer David Longbehn observed one of the suspects leaving a wooded area. When Longbehn  approached this suspect, the man struck him in the face with a toolbox, breaking his nose and fracturing his eye sockets. The suspect then attempted to take Officer Longbehn’s weapon. The two struggled, but the officer managed to fire a shot, fatally wounding the suspect.

Police Officer Brian Huff

Detroit Michigan Police Department

May 3, 2010 – Officer Brian Huff was shot and killed when he responded to a shots-fired call at a known drug house. When Officer Huff and other officers made entry they were met with gunfire. Officer Huff was the first officer through the door and was shot multiple times just above his vest. Four other officers were wounded in the exchange as they attempted to pull Officer Huff to safety.

Deputy Sheriff Kory Dahlvi, 29

Vilas County Wisconsin Sheriff’s Department

April 26, 2010 – Deputy Kory Dahlvr was responding to assist another officer when the driver of dump truck, 49-year-old James Peontke, pulled in front of the deputy’s patrol car. Deputy Dahlvr was killed in the crash.

James Peontke, the driver of the dump truck, was charged with operating while intoxicated.

Cherri Dahlvr, Deputy Dahlvr’s mother, said, “I can remember him saying to me, ‘Mom, if something happens to me on the job, just remember, I was doing what I wanted to be doing.”

Deputy Sheriff Ian Michael Deutch, 27

Nye County Nevada Sheriff’s Office

April 26, 2010 – Deputy Ian Deutch was shot and killed while responding to a domestic dispute at an area casino. The suspect opened fire with a high-powered rifle, striking the deputy three times in the abdomen. Each of the rounds penetrated his vest. Deputy Deutch had just returned from a deployment to Afghanistan with his National Guard unit. This was his second day back on the job.

Officer Rodney Holder, 50

Abilene Texas Police Department

April 29, 2010 – Officer Rodney Holder was killed in an automobile accident while attempting to stop a speeder. Another vehicle struck his motorcycle as he entered an intersection.  Officer Holder leaves behind his wife, daughter, and a son.

Officer Bryan J. Durman, 27

Lexington-Fayette Kentucky Urban County Police Department

April 29, 2010 – Officer Bryan Durman was investigating a loud music complaint when he was struck by an SUV. The driver of the vehicle, Glen Doneghy, slowed down, but fled the scene. Officer Durman was killed in the accident. The suspect was later arrested after a standoff with police.

Glen Doneghy was charged with first-degree murder and numerous other charges.

Deputy Sheriff Jacob Rene Rayos, 32

Reeves County Texas Sheriff’s Department

April 11, 2010 – Deputy Jacob Rayos was killed in a rollover accident while attempting to locate a criminal suspect. Deputy Rayos began his career in 1998 as a corrections officer with the department, and then moved into patrol in 2004. He leaves behind five children.

Officer Hector Ayala, 31

Montgomery County Maryland Police Department

April 4, 2010 –  Officer Ayala was killed in an automobile accident while responding to assist another officer with a fight call. He is survived by his wife, 14-month old son, and unborn triplets.

Deputy Sheriff Chad Pritchard, 26

Overton County Tennessee Sheriff’s Office

April 6, 2010 – Deputy Chad Pritchard, along with other officers, was investigating a cold case homicide just outside Standing Stone State Park, when the area where he was standing gave way. Deputy Pritchard fell 160 feet to his death inside the sinkhole. He leaves behind his wife and parents.

Officer Timothy Joseph Zurovet, 54

Forest Hill Texas Police Department

March 24, 2010 – Officer Timothy Zurovetz succumbed to injuries sustained in an automobile accident on June 12, 1981, while responding to an emergency call. Officer Zurovetz is survived by his daughter and mother.

Corporal Kevin Cusack, 45

South Carolina Highway Patrol

March 27, 2010 – Corporal Kevin Cusack was killed in a single vehicle accident when his patrol car left the highway. He is survived by his three children.

Sergeant Ira G. Essoe Sr., 69

Orange County Sheriff’s Department

February 4, 2010 – Sgt. Ira G. Essoe, Sr. succumbed to complications from gunshot wounds he received in November 1980. He and his partner had attempted to stop three men from breaking into a car in a mall parking lot when all three suspects opened fire on Sgt. Essoe, striking him twice. Sergeant Essoe survived by his wife and three children.

Officer Brian Walsh, 34

Federal Way, Wa. Police Department

March 21, 2010 – After responding to an officer-involved shooting, Officer Brian Walsh suffered a fatal heart attack. He is survived by his expectant wife and two children.

Ranger Kenneth Betancourt, 29

Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources

Ranger Félix Rodríguez, 31

Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources

March 23, 2010 – Ranger Félix Rodríguez and Ranger Kenneth Betancourt were shot and killed during an apparent robbery attempt at the Department of Natural and Environment Resources in San Juan.

Ranger Betancourt is survived by his two young children.

Officer David Haynes, 27

St. Louis Missouri Police Department

March 24, 2010 – Officer David Haynes was killed in an automobile accident during a vehicle pursuit of a burglary suspect. He is survived by his wife.

March 13, 2010 – Officer Thomas Patton II suffered a fatal heart attack while in a foot pursuit of a criminal suspect. He leaves behind his four-month-old daughter and fiancee.

Patrolman James Kerstetter, 43

Elyria Ohio Police Department

March 15, 2010 – Patrolman James Kerstetter was shot and killed after responding to a call about a man who’d exposed himself to a child. Patrolman Kerstette is survived by his wife and three daughters.
