Forest Service Law Enforcement and Investigations

March 10, 2010 – While on routine patrol, a man hunting for coyotes mistook Officer Upton for game and shot and killed him with a night vision-equipped, high-powered rifle. Officer Upton leaves behind his wife and four-year-old daughter.

Corporal J. R. Searc, 33

Ouachita Louisiana Parish Sheriff’s Office

March 6, 2010 – On March 4, 2010, Corporal J.R. Searc was shot while answering an assault call. He succumbed to his wounds two days later. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Officer James Bonnea, 26

Jackson Michigan Police Department

March 9, 2010 – Officer James Bonnea was shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance.


Private First Class Thomas P. (Tom) Jensen, 27

Prince George’s County Maryland Police Department

March 9, 2010 – Private First Class Tom Jensen succumbed to wounds he’d received in an automobile accident ten days earlier while responding to a burglary call. He is survived by his wife and parents.

Sergeant Alan J. Haymaker, 56

Chicago Police Department

February 22, 2010 – Sergeant Alan J. Haymaker was killed in an automobile accident while responding to a burglary-in-progress call. He leaves behind his wife (pictured above holding flag), three daughters, his parents, three brothers, and two sisters.

Deputy Sheriff Joel Wahlenmaier, 48

Fresno County California Sheriff’s Department

February 25, 2010 – Deputy Sheriff Joel Wahlenmaier was shot and killed while assisting California State Fire Marshals serve a warrant on a suspected arsonist. He leaves behind his wife, son, daughter, and parents.

Officer Javier Bejar, 28

Reedley California Police Department

March 1, 2010 – Officer Javier Bejar died from a gunshot wound he received four days earlier when he responded to a shots fired call from California State Fire Marshals and Deputy Joel Wahlenmaier. Officer Bejar was using his patrol car as cover during a standoff with the arsonist when the shooter fired a high-powered rifle at Officer Bejar, critically wounding him. The officer is surviived by his wife.

Deputy Sheriff Ken Collier, 39

San Diego County California Sheriff’s Department

February 28, 2010 – Deputy Ken Collier was killed in a single-car automobile accident while in pursuit of a drunk driver. The driver had failed to stop when the deputy attempted to pull him over for driving on the wrong side of the highway. Deputy Collier is survived by his fiance.

Inspector Brian C. Waynant Sr., 45

Wilmington Delaware Fire Marshal’s Office

March 1, 2010 – Inspector Brian C. Waynant, Sr. was searching for an arson suspect near the Wilmington Amtrak Station when he was struck and killed by an Amtrak train. He leaves behind his wife, son, and daughter.

Trooper Andrew C. Baldridge, 25

Ohio State Highway Patrol

February 4, 2010 – Trooper Andrew Baldridge was killed in an automobile accident while responding to assist a deputy sheriff. His training officer, who was riding with him, sustained non-life threatening injuries from the crash. Trooper Baldridge is survived by his parents. He’d only been on the job for two months.

Senior Parole Agent Ellane Aimiuwu, 57

Illinois Department of Corrections

February 7, 2010 – Agent Ellane Aimiuwu was killed in an automobile accident when an out of control SUV struck two cars and then flipped over, landing on top of Agent Aimiuwu’s department vehicle. Another car was unable to stop and also struck Agent Aimiuwu’s vehicle.

Deputy Sheriff William Frederick Schuck III, 26

Oconee County South Carolina Sheriff’s Office

February 7, 2010 – Deputy Sheriff William Schuck spoke to his pregnant wife on the phone and was then killed in a freak accident just moments later. He’d been patrolling a dirt road when his car became stuck in the mud.  The deputy got out of the car and was surveying the situation when the car slid forward, pinning him against a tree. A search was initiated when Deputy Schuck failed to answer his radio or telephone. A state trooper finally located him at 3am.

Corporal Jeremy McLaren, 28

Spring Hill Tennessee Police Department

February 7, 2010 – Corporal Jeremy McLaren died as a result of injuries he sustained in an automobile accident on February 5, 2010. He’d been returning to the jail after a visit to the magistrate’s office to have citations issued when the driver of a pickup truck ran a red light and struck the corporal’s patrol car. Corporal McLaren had to be xtricated from his vehicle by a rescue crew. He is survived by his wife, parents, and siblings.

Captain Timothy Joel Bergeron, 49

Terrebonne Louisiana Parish Sheriff’s Office

February 7, 2010 – Captain Timothy Joel Bergeron was killed in a motorcycle accident while escorting a Mardi Gras float to the parade starting point. A vehicle turned in front of the float hitting Captain Bergeron head on. He leaves behind his wife and five children.

Deputy Sheriff Don McCutcheon, 36

Clark County Missouri Sheriff’s Office

February 8, 2010 – After returning from answering patrol calls, Deputy Sheriff Don McCutcheon began shoveling snow from the front steps of the sheriff’s office. He soon experienced chest pains and drove himself to a nearby rescue squad where he collapsed while being treated. Deputy McCutcheon was pronounced dead at the hospital. He leaves behind three children.

Officer David T. Zolendziewski, 53

Holyoke Massachusetts Police Department

February 11, 2010 – Officer David Zolendziewski died as a result of injuries he received in an automobile accident six weeks earlier. He’s been on patrol when his car skidded on ice, striking a tree. He leaves behind a wife and three sons.

Lieutenant Eric Lewis Shuhandle, 42

Gilbert Arizona Police Department

Lieutenant Eric Shuhandle was shot and killed on January 28, 2010, as he approached a vehicle he’d stopped while on patrol. Lt. Schuhandle is survived by his two daughters, a sister, and his parents.

Speaking of the two criminals who murdered Lt. Schuhandle, Sgt. Todd Baty shared these words during the funeral, “I would gladly tell each of you to go to hell, but my authority only goes so far and I can’t make that decision. I have to admit there was a disappointment about the hospital when we learned that they were only wounded, but any of us who have ever swatted a roach know that they do not always die as quickly or easily as we would like.”

Investigator Jerry Crabtree, 76

On January 29, 2010, Investigator Jerry Crabtree was killed in an automobile accident when his police vehicle collided with another car. Investigator Crabtree is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.

Juvenile Detention Officer Leonard Wall, 58

Jefferson County Arkansas Sheriff’s Office

January 31, 2010 – Officer Leonard Wall was beaten to death by three juvenile inmates, who then took the officers keys and escaped. One of the killers is still at large.

Sergeant Noel David Cordero-Guzmán, 23

Ponce Municipal Police Department
Puerto Rico

January 15, 2010 – Sergeant Noel Cordero-Guzmán was first badly beaten, and then shot and killed with his own weapon while attempting to break up a disturbance. He is survived by his expectant wife and five-year-old child.

Agent Frank Glover, 61

South Carolina Public Service Authority

January 29, 2010 – Agent Frank Glover suffered a fatal heart attack during a scuffle with a criminal suspect. Agent Glover is survived by his two daughters.

Captain Chad Reed, 33

Dixie County Florida Sheriffs Office

On January 14, 2010, Captain Chad Reed was shot and killed during a shootout with a suspect wanted in connection with the murder of two elderly women. Captain Reed is survived by his wife and two children.

Corporal Christopher Milito, 40

Delaware River Port Authority Police Department

Corporal Christopher Milito was investigating an accident on January 16, 2010, when he was struck and killed by a passing motorist. Corporal Milito is survived by numerous family members.

Trooper Jill Mattice, 31

New York State Police

Trooper Jill Mattice was killed on January 20, 2010, in a head on collision with a tractor trailer. Trooper Mattice is survived by her husband, brother, and parents.

Corporal James J. Szuba, 42

Mishawaka Indiana Police Department

Corporal James Szuba and his canine partner, Ricky, were killed in an automobile accident during a high-speed pursuit on January 9, 2010.

Corporal Szuba is survived by his wife, son, daughter, two brothers, two sisters, and his mother.

Officer Alfred Celestai, 54

New Orleans Police Department

Officer Alfred Celestai died on January 11, 2010, from injuries he received two days earlier when his patrol car was struck by a drunk driver. The drunk driver ran a red light and collided with Officer Celestai’s police vehicle.

Officer Celestai (in red hat) practices for a fund-raising concert.

Officer Celestai, a survivor of three shootouts with armed suspects, is survived by his parents and three children.

Trooper Duane Dalton, 39

Louisiana State Police

Trooper Duane Dalton was killed in an automobile accident on January 12, 2010, when his patrol car was struck by another vehicle as he entered an intersection. Trooper Dalton is survived by his wife and three sons.

Officer Craig Story, 34

Arlington Texas Police Department

Officer Craig Story was killed in a motorcycle accident when his police motorcycle collided with a school bus. His lights and siren were on at the time of the accident.

Officer Story is survived by his expectant wife and son.

Trooper Paul G. Richey, 40

Pennsylvania State Police

On January 13, 2010, Trooper Paul Richey was shot and killed when he and another trooper responded to a domestic disturbance call. He was the 93rd member of the Pennsylvania State Police to lose his life in the line of duty. Trooper Richey is survived by his wife, son, and a daughter.

Deputy Sheriff James Louis Anderson, 44

St. Johns County Florida Sheriff’s Office

Deputy James Anderson was killed in an automobile accident on January 14, 2010. A vehicle traveling in the wrong lane of traffic struck the deputy’s patrol car head on.

Deputy Anderson is survived by his wife and four children.

Officer Maylon Thompson (Tommy) Bishop Jr., 63

Guntersville Alabama Police Department

Officer Tommy Bishop died on January 1, 2010 as a result of gunshot wounds he received sixteen years earlier. He’d responded to a domestic disturbance where a man had shot his spouse. The suspect shot Officer Bishop below his vest, striking his spine.

Deputy Sheriff John Bernard, 52

Grant County Washington Sheriff’s Office

Deputy Sheriff John Bernard was killed in a single vehicle accident while on patrol on January 3, 2010. He is survived by his wife and two sons. One of his sons also serves as a deputy with the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.

Special Deputy Marshal Stanley W. Cooper, 72

United States Department of Justice – Marshals Service

Special Deputy Marshal Stanley W. Cooper was shot and killed at the Lloyd D. George Federal Courthouse in Las Vegas, Nevada on January 4, 2010.

Deputy Sheriff Josie Greathouse Fox, 38

Millard County Utah Sheriff’s Office

Deputy Sheriff Josie Greathouse Fox was shot and killed on January 5, 2010 as she attempted to stop a vehicle suspected in a car theft. Deputy Greathouse Fox requested backup during the stop. When her sergeant arrived he found her suffering from a gunshot wound to her neck.

She is survived by her husband and two children.

Roberto Miramontes Roman is one of two men arrested for the murder of Deputy Sheriff Josie Greathouse Fox. Roman is in the U.S. illegally and has been deported back to Mexico twice since 1998. He’s also served time in a Utah state prison for drug offenses. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

The second man involved in the shooting is Ruben Chavez Reyes. Reyes has not yet been charged in connection with the deputy’s murder; however, he is being held on an immigration hold.

Deputy Sheriff Roy Bruce Sutton Jr., 33

Jefferson County Indiana Sheriff’s Department

On December 11, 2009, Deputy Roy Sutton was responding to a domestic dispute with weapons involved when his patrol car ran off the road and went airborne. The car struck a tree on the driver’s side. Deputy Sutton was pronounced dead at the scene. He is survived by his wife, brother, three sisters, and his mother.

Captain Dennis Darrell Cagle, 56

Henderson Tennessee Police Department

Captain Dennis Cagle was the first responding officer to a robbery-in-progress on December 10, 2009. He was shot in the abdomen as he entered the store. Captain Cagle and another officer exchanged gunfire with the suspect, wounding him as well. He was apprehended and is currently in custody, as is his girlfriend.

Captain Cagle died on December 13, 2009 as a result of gunshot wounds. He is survived by his wife, son, and two step-daughters. Captain Cagle was a 30-year veteran.

Deputy Sheriff Adam Michael Mehagan, 26

Osage County Oklahoma Sheriff’s Office

Just after midnight on December 3, 2009, Deputy Adam Mehagan was responding to assist another deputy when he lost control of his patrol car and overturned twice. He was ejected from the car and died at the scene of the crash. Deputy Mehagan is survived by his wife and eleven-month-old daughter.

Police Officer Philip Davis, 33

Officer Phillip Davis was shot and killed during a traffic stop on December 3, 2009. He’d stopped a car, driven by a local pharmacist, for speeding. After talking to the driver, Davis went back to his patrol car to write a traffic summons. When he returned to the speeder’s car with ticket in hand, the pharmacist told the officer that his brother was a police officer in a nearby town. Then, without provocation, he shot Officer Davis in the face. A passing motorist saw the shooting and called police. The killer was arrested a short time later at a police roadblock. He was riding with his police officer brother at the time.

Officer Davis is survived by his wife and two children.

Police Officer Michael Crawsha, 32

Penn Hills Pennsylvania Police Department

Officer Michael Crawshaw was shot and killed while responding to a 911 call on December 6, 2009. He was sitting in his patrol car waiting for backup to arrive when the suspect began shooting at the officer with an AK-47. Officer Crenshaw was not married and had no children, so he often volunteered to work for other officers so they could spend time with their kids during holidays and special occasions. His brother is also a police officer.

Deputy Sheriff Charles Douglas (Charlie) Brown Jr., 38

Martin County North Carolina Sheriff’s Office

Deputy Charlie Brown was shot and killed on December 8, 2009 while responding to reports of a man walking along a road firing a rifle. The suspect, armed with an assault rifle, refused to obey officers commands to drop the weapon. Instead, he opened fire, fatally wounding Deputy Brown. The suspect was also killed during the exchange of gunfire.

Deputy Brown is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Correctional Officer Daniel Leach, 49

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department

On November 21, 2009, Officer Daniel Leach was killed in an automobile accident. He was driving a prisoner transport van to pick up prisoners when a tractor trailer pulled out in front of him causing a collision. Officer Leach was killed instantly. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Officer Trevor Nettleton, 30

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department

Officer Trevor Nettleton was at home working in his garage on November 19, 2009 when several gang members entered and began shooting. Officer Nettleton was able to return fire, wounding at least one suspect before he was shot to death. It is believed that the shooting was the result of a botched robbery attempt.  Officer Nettleton is survived by his wife, two-year-old son, two-month-old daughter, a brother who is serving in Iraq, and his parents. Officer Nettleton’s father is a retired police officer.

Charged with one count each of murder with a deadly weapon with the intent to promote, further or assist a criminal gang; as well as one count each of conspiracy to commit robbery; burglary while in possession of a firearm and attempted robbery, all with criminal gang enhancements.

Quadre Scott, 18

Charged with one count each of murder with a deadly weapon with the intent to promote, further or assist a criminal gang; as well as one count each of conspiracy to commit robbery; burglary while in possession of a firearm and attempted robbery, all with criminal gang enhancements.

Emmitt Ferguson, 18

One count of being an accessory to murder, also with a gang enhancement. He allegedly helped to hide the gun used in the shooting after the other four had been arrested.

Prentice Marshall, 18

Charged with one count each of murder with a deadly weapon with the intent to promote, further or assist a criminal gang; as well as one count each of conspiracy to commit robbery; burglary while in possession of a firearm and attempted robbery, all with criminal gang enhancements.

Adrian Pena, 17

Charged with one count each of murder with a deadly weapon with the intent to promote, further or assist a criminal gang; as well as one count each of conspiracy to commit robbery; burglary while in possession of a firearm and attempted robbery, all with criminal gang enhancements.
