Officer Joseph Fulton, 45

Kosciusko Mississippi Police Department

On November 8, 2009, Officer Joseph Fulton suffered a fatal heart attack during a high speed pursuit. Fellow officers attempted CPR, but their efforts were not successful. Officer Fulton is survived by his wife and three children.

Sergeant Jeffery B. Shaw, 40

Kosciusko Indiana County Sheriff’s Department

On November 12, 2009, Officer Jeffery Shaw was on routine patrol when the driver of a truck veered over the center line of the roadway. The truck struck Officer’s Shaw’s patrol car causing both vehicles to burst into flames. Officer Shaw was pronounced dead at the hospital. He is survived by his wife, a seven-year-old daughter and a nine-year-old son.

Officer Jarrod John Martinez, 30

California Highway Patrol

Officer Jarrod Martinez was killed in a motorcycle crash on October 29, 2009. His one year anniversary with the department would have been on October 30, the day after the accident. Officer Martinez is survived by his wife and four-year-old daughter.

Officer Timothy Q. Brenton, 39

Seattle Washington Police Department

Officer Timothy Brenton was shot and killed on October 31, 2009. He and a trainee were sitting in their patrol car discussing the details of a traffic stop they’d just completed when a car pulled alongside. Someone in that car opened fire on the two officers. Officer Brenton was killed instantly. The officer trainee, Britt Sweeney, was grazed in the back and survived her wounds. Officer Sweeney was also able to get out of the patrol car and return fire. The suspect remains at large. Officer Brenton is survived by his wife, son, and daughter. His father and uncle are both retired police officers.

Trooper David Lane, 30

New York State Police

Trooper David Lane was killed in an automobile accident while on patrol on November 4, 2009. Trooper Lane had previously served his country in both Afghanistan and Iraq.

Detention Officer Dionicio Camacho, 51

Harris County Texas Sheriff’s Department

Officer Dronicio Camacho suffered a heart attack on October 21, 2009 during defensive tactics training. He was hospitalized on life support, but passed away on October, 23, 2009. Officer Comacho leaves behind his wife and son.

Reserve Deputy Mike Wilken, 56

Ramsey County Minnesota Sheriff’s Department

On October 24, 2009, Deputy Mike Wilken was directing traffic at an annual sheriff’s office D.A.R.E. fund raiser, a Halloween haunted house, when he was struck by a car as he walked on a crosswalk. He succumbed to his injuries the following day. Deputy Wilken leaves behind his wife, two children and three siblings.

Special Agent Forrest Leamon, 37

Special Agent Chad Michael, 30

Special Agent Michael Weston, 37

United States Department of Justice – Drug Enforcement Administration

Agents Forrest Leamon, Chad Michael, and Michael Weston were returning from an counter-narcotics mission in Afghanistan when their military helicopter crashed, killing all three agents. The military personnel on board the aircraft also died in the crash.

Lieutenant Benjamin Santiago-Fragoso, 44

Puerto Rico Police Department

On August 16, 2009, Lieutenant Benjamin Santiago-Fragoso and Agent Jorge Sanchez-Santiago were transporting a prisoner to jail. The suspect struggled with the officers and somehow managed to gain control of a weapon. Lieutenant Santiago-Fragoso was shot three times in the chest. He died on September 23, 2009. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Sergeant Timothy Olsovsky, 51

Victoria County Texas Sheriff’s Office

Sergeant Timothy Olsovsky suffered a fatal heart attack during a nighttime firearms training session on October 7, 2009. Sergeant Olsovsky is survived by his wife and daughter.

Sergeant Mickey Hutchens, 50

Winston Salem North Carolina Police Department

Earlier this week I told you about two Winston Salem, North Carolina officers, Sgt. Mickey Hutchens and Officer Daniel Clark, who were shot while responding to a domestic violence call. Sadly, Sergeant Mickey Hutchens, did not survive. Sgt. Hutchins passed away in the company of his family and fellow officers on October 12, 2009.

Sgt. Hutchens’ funeral is scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m. at Wait Chapel. Hutchens will be buried at Forbush Baptist Church in Yadkin County following the service. Full coverage of the funeral may be viewed here.

The suspect in the shootings of the two officers, 35-year-old Monte Evans, was shot and killed during the exchange of gunfire at the scene. Evans’ family attended the memorial service for Sgt. Hutchens, where they asked for forgiveness and prayed for the sergeant’s family. As a family, they brought a single white bouquet to place at the memorial.

Deputy Sheriff Francis David Blake, 42

Burnet County Texas Sheriffs Department

Deputy Francis Blake died in an automobile accident on October 3, 2009. He was responding to a serious motor vehicle crash when he hit a deer. His car then spun out of control and struck a tree. Deputy Blake is survived by his wife and four children.

Officer Milburn (Millie) Beitel III, 30

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department

Officer Millie Beitel died on October 8, 2009, from injuries sustained in an on duty automobile accident a day earlier.

Patrolman Jerry Jones, 27

Charleston West Virginia Police Department

Officer Jerry Jones’s career came to an end on September 13, 2009. He and other officers were involved in a pursuit with a suspect wanted in a hit and run accident when the fleeing criminal began to ram the police vehicles. In self defense, officers opened fire on the suspect. Officer Jones was struck by crossfire. The round entered his body below the neck area, just above his protective body armor. He died while receiving emergency treatment at the local hospital. Officer Jones, a veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, is survived by his wife. They had been recently married.

Deputy Sheriff Christopher Ray, 22

Southampton County Virginia Sheriffs Office

Deputy Chris Ray was killed in an automobile accident on August 29, 2009. He and his field training officer were responding to a fight call when they swerved to avoid a fallen tree. The patrol car, driven by the FTO, struck another tree, causing the deputy’s fatal injuries. Deputy Ray had served with the Southhampton Sheriffs Office for only three months.

Deputy Sheriff Christopher Johnson, 34

Platte County Nebraska Sheriffs Office

Deputy Chrisopher Johnson was killed in an automobile accident on August 29, 2009 while responding to an accident call. His patrol car collided with a tractor trailer that made a left turn in front of the deputy’s patrol car.

Patrolman Chad Spicer, 29

Georgetown Delaware Police Department

Patrolman Chad Spicer was shot and killed while attempting to apprehend a suspect in a shooting. Patrolman Spicer was shot before he had a chance to exit his vehicle. He is survived by his wife and daughter.

Border Patrol Agent Robert Wimer Rosas, 30

U.S. Department of Homeland Security – Customs and Border Protection

Agent Robert Rosas had been following a group of suspicious individuals on July 23, 2009, when gunfire erupted, killing him. Four of the men have since been arrested. The shooter is still believed to be at large. Agent Rosas is survived by his wife and two children.

Sergeant Steven May, 53

Modesto California Police Department

On July 23, 2009, Sergeant Steve May succumbed to injuries he received during a vehicular assault in 2002. A suspect in a stolen car was fleeing from police when he rammed police several cars, including the patrol car driven by Sergeant May. Sergeant May is survived by his wife and two children.

Sergeant David Kinterknecht, 41

Montrose Colorado Police Department

Sergeant David Kinterknecht was shot and killed on July 25, 2009, while working a domestic violence call. Sergeant Kinterknecht leaves behind a wife and two children.

Deputy Sheriff Robbie Chase Whitebird, 23

Deputy Sheriff Marvin Williams, 43

Seminole County Oklahoma Sheriffs Office

Deputy Robbie Whitebird and Deputy Marvin Williams were shot and killed on July 26, 2009, while serving an arrest warrant. The suspect later surrendered to police.

Deputy Sheriff Shane Thomas Detwiler, 31

Chambers County Texas Sheriff’s Office

Deputy Shane Detwiler was shot and killed on July 13, 2009 while searching a mobile home for a suspect who was involved in a shooting incident earlier in the day. The suspect, a former reserve police officer, was wounded during the exchange of gunfire. He, too, died.

Deputy Detwiler is survied by his wife, three children, his parents, and a sister.

Sergeant Joe Harris volunteering in 2007.

Sergeant Joe Harris was shot and killed on July 16, 2009, while attempting to arrest a burglary suspect. The suspect also died during the exchange of gunfire.

Police Officer Omar J. Edwards, 25

New York City Department

Officer Omar Edwards was shot and killed by fellow police officers who mistook him for a fleeing felon. Officer Edwards had been in plainclothes, chasing a criminal suspect when the officers opened fire, killing him.

Police Officer David Loeffler, 36

Minneapolis Police Department

Officer Loeffler was struck by a drunk driver in 1997. He succumbed to his injuries on May 29, 2009.

Master Sergeant Steven Hood, 50

Mississippi Highway Patrol

Master Sergeant Hood was killed in an automobile accident on May 29, 2009. The suspect he’d been pursuing was charged with manslaughter.

Police Officer Alejandro Valadez, 27

Chicago Police Department

Officer Valadez was shot and killed on June 1, 2009, while questioning two criminal suspects.

Lieutenant Greg Jonas, 58

Centreville Illinois Police Department

Lieutenant Jonas was shot and killed on June 2, 2009, while questioning a suspect.

Officer Brandon Sigler, 26

Mobile Alabama Police Department

Officer Sigler was shot and killed on June 2, 2009, while investigating a disorderly conduct complaint.
