August 6, 2017 – Officer Gary Lee Michael, Jr. was shot and killed during a traffic stop for an expired registration. As he approached the vehicle, the driver stepped out of his car and began firing with a rifle.

Corporal Monty Platt, 47

West Texas A&M University Police Department

August 8, 2017 – Corporal Monty Platt died as a result of complications resulting from the bit of an injured feral cat he’d attempted to capture. He is survived by his wife, son, and mother.

Trooper Pilot Burke M.M. Bates, 40

Virginia State Police

August 12, 2017 – Trooper Pilot Berke Bates and Lieutenant Pilot Jay Cullen were killed when their helicopter crashed while monitoring a protest. Trooper Bates is survived by his wife, twin daughter and son. He died one day before his 41st birthday.

August 12, 2017 – Lieutenant Pilot Jay Cullen Trooper Pilot Berke Bates were killed when their helicopter crashed while monitoring a protest. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

Deputy Sheriff Jimmy Clark, 50

Quitman County Mississippi Sheriff’s Office

August 13, 2017 – Deputy Jimmy Clark was killed in an auto crash while responding to a shooting call. He is survived by his wife and children.

August 17. 2017 – Correctional Officer David Torres-Chaparro suffered a fatal heart attack while participating in riot control training.

Detective Elise Ybarra, 33

Abilene Texas Police Department

August 6, 2017 – Detective Elise Ybarra was killed in an auto crash when a vehicle struck her unmarked vehicle from the rear. She is survived by her husband and 10-month-old daughter.

August 5, 2017 – Deputy Sheriff Jason Fann was killed in a vehicle crash while responding to a traffic accident.

Lieutenant Aaron Allan, 38

Southport Indiana Police Department

July 27, 2017 – Lieutenant Aaron Allan responded to a rollover crash and as is typical of these calls, officers run toward the scene hoping to help or save victims. As Lt. Allan approached this one, though, one of the occupants of the vehicle opened fire striking him multiple times. A nearby witness says at least twenty rounds were fired.

Sadly, Lt. Allan succumbed to his wounds.

He leaves behind his wife and young son.

Lt. D. Heath Meyer

Lieutenant. D. Heath Meyer, 38

Oklahoma Highway Patrol

July 24, 2017 – Lieutenant D. Heath Meyer was struck and killed by a patrol car involved in a pursuit. He’d deployed stop sticks and as two patrol cars attempted to avoid the spike strips they collided. One of the two police vehicles then struck Lt. Meyer.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Trooper Joel R. Davis, 36

New York State Police

July 9, 2017 – Trooper Joel Davis was shot and killed after responding to a domestic violence and shot-fired call. He was shot as he walked toward the house. The shooter, an active-duty Army soldier, had also killed his wife and wounded another woman who lived there.

Trooper Davis is survived by his wife and three children.

July 14, 2017 – Trooper Michael Paul Stewart was killed in a vehicle crash when a garbage truck turned in front of his patrol car.

Officer Miosotis Familia – EOW, July 5, 2017

Officer Miosotis Familia, 48

New York City Police Department

July 5, 2017 – Officer Miosotis Familia was shot and killed by ambush as she sat inside a marked police command vehicle. The shooter walked up to the vehicle and fired through the window, striking Officer Familia in the head. The suspect was killed in a shootout with other officers.

Officer Familia is survived by her three children.


Officer Miguel I. Moreno – EOW, 6/30/17

June 30, 2017 – Officer Miguel Moreno was shot and killed as he and his partner approached two suspects who were standing near a car that had been broken into. The shooter immediately opened fire, striking Officer Moreno in the head and his partner in the torso. Despite his wounds, Officer Moreno’s partner pulled his co-worker’s body to safety while returning fire, wounding the shooter.

July 4, 2017 – Officer Robert Johnson was struck and killed by a vehicle while he stood on the side of the road attending to a crash that had already occurred.

 

 


Officer Joe William Heddy, Jr. – EOW, 6/17/17

Escambia County Florida Department of Corrections

June 17, 2017 – Officer Joe William Heddy, Jr. suffered a fatal heart attack after struggling with an inmate who’d tied a bedsheets around his neck during a suicide attempt.

He is survived by his wife, three children, and seven grandchildren.

 

 

Trooper Ryan Albin, 37

Illinois State Police

June 28, 2017 – Trooper Ryan Albin was killed in a vehicle collision while on patrol. His canine, who was also inside the patrol car, was transported to a local vet where the dog was treated for minor injuries.


 

Master Sergeant William Trampas Bishop, 52

Florida Highway Patrol

June 17, 2017 – While Master Sergeant William Bishop was investigating a vehicle crash, a secondary crash occurred at the scene. One of the vehicles involved in the secondary crash struck Sergeant Bishop, pinning him beneath the car. He is survived by his wife and son.


Overall line of duty deaths are up 24%.

Correctional Officer Curtis Billue, 58

Georgia Department of Corrections

June 13, 2017 – Officers Curtis Billue and Christopher Monica were shot and killed while transporting 33 inmates in a bus. Two of the inmates managed to overpower and disarm one of the officers. They used his weapon to shoot both officers and then carjacked a passing vehicle. Later, during a pursuit, they fired at sheriff’s deputies and then tried to steal a car but were captured at gunpoint by the homeowner and a neighbor. The two held the escaped prisoners until police arrived.

Lieutenant Patrick Weatherford, 42

June 12, 2017 – Lieutenant Patrick Weatherford was shot and killed while in a foot pursuit of a larceny suspect. During the chase the suspect turned and fired, striking Lieutenant Weatherford.


Corrections Officer Shana Tedder, 41

Texas Department of Criminal Justice

June 9, 2017 – Officer Shana Tedder suffered a fatal heart attack following a use of force incident. Coworkers attempted CPR but were unable to revive her.

Special Agent Michael T. Walter, 45

Virginia State Police

May 27, 2017 – Special Agent Michael Walter was shot and killed while investigating a suspicious vehicle in a high crime area of Richmond. When Agent Walter and other officers approached, a passenger opened fire, striking him in the head. He is survived by his wife, daughter and two sons.


Deputy Sheriff William Durr, 36

Lincoln County Mississippi Sheriff’s Office

May, 27, 2017 – Deputy William Durr was shot and killed after responding to a domestic violence call. The suspect killed seven other people before being captured while attempting suicide-by-cop.


Lieutenant Aaron Lloyd Crook, 32

Bluefield West Virginia Police Department

May 30, 2017 – Lieutenant Aaron Crook was killed in a vehicle crash while involved in a pursuit. He is survived by his wife and two children.


Deputy Sheriff Devon Hodges, 30

Anderson County South Carolina Sheriff’s Office

June 1, 2017 – Deputy Devon Hodges was killed in a boating accident during a joint marine patrol exercise with the Army Corps of Engineers. He is survived by his wife and children.

Chief of Police Steven Eric DiSario, 34

Kirkersville Ohio Police Department

May 12, 2017 – Chief of Police Eric DiSario was shot and killed while responding to a call regarding a man with a gun at a local nursing home. The suspect also shot and killed two people inside the facility.

Chief DiSario is survived by his expectant wife and six children.


Deputy Sheriff Mason Moore, 42

Broadwater County Montana Sheriff’s Office

May 16, 2017 – Deputy Mason Moore was shot and killed during a vehicle pursuit. While attempting to escape capture, occupants of the fleeing car fired multiple rounds at Deputy Mason’s patrol vehicle, causing it to veer off the roadway and crash. The suspects then made a U-turn to pull beside the officer’s car where they fired at least twenty-four rounds into the vehicle, striking Deputy Moore in the head.

The father and son pair then fled but again engaged in shootouts with police that took place in other counties, with numerous law enforcement officers from various agencies involved. One of the shooters was eventually killed by police. The other was taken into custody and charged with multiple offenses, including murder and attempted murder.

The father and son, according to police investigators, were on a mission to kill a police officer.


Border Patrol Agent Isaac Morales, 30

May 24, 2017 – Agent Isaac Morales succumbed to injuries received four days earlier when he was stabbed in the eye during an unprovoked attack as he and others were walking to their cars.


Deputy Sheriff Jason Garner, 41

Stanislaus County California Sheriff’s Office

May 13, 2017 – Deputy Jason Garner and Community Service Officer Raschel Johnson were killed in a vehicle crash while en route to a burglary call. The patrol vehicle left the roadway and became engulfed in flames after striking a parked car and a dumpster. Officer Rachel Johnson was on a ride-along at the time of the crash.

Deputy Garner is survived by his wife and four children.

May 11, 2017 – Lieutenant Kevin Mainhart was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop of a vehicle associated with a domestic violence incident. A passerby found the officer’s body and called police to the scene. During the search for the shooter, officers discovered two additional bodies in the home of the original domestic violence call. The suspect remains at large.

May 10, 2017 – Officer Jonathan Ginka was killed in a vehicle crash while on patrol. He is survived by his wife and two children.

May 6, 2017 – Deputy Jimmy Tennyson died as a result of injuries sustained in a vehicle crash while traveling to a local high school where he served as school resource officer. He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.

  • KIRKERSVILLE, Ohio – Earlier today, the Kirkersville chief of police was shot and killed by ambush.

  • A Louisiana State Police trooper and at least one other officer were shot Thursday during a standoff with a man who they’d tried to serve a warrant on in a rural location. The two officers are expected to survive.
