Master Deputy Sheriff Joseph “Shane” Robbins, 40

Polk County Florida Sheriff’s Office

April 26, 2013 – Master Deputy Shane Robbins was killed in an automobile crash when his patrol car left the roadway. He leaves behind his wife and five children.

Officer William J. “Jerry” McCarthy, IV, 60

Shenango Township Pennsylvania Police Department

May 2, 2013 – Officer Jerry McCarthy was killed when he and his partner responded to an area of a pursuit-in-progress. The suspect vehicle ran a stop sign, striking the officers’ patrol car on the passenger side where Officer McCarthy was seated.

One month earlier, Officer McCarthy’s partner, who was also injured in the crash, had arrested the suspect driver for operating a motor vehicle without a license. She was apprehended after the crash and charged with manslaughter, among other offenses.
