Officer Alexander Thalmann, 22

New Bern North Carolina Police Department

March 31, 2014 – Officer Alexander Thalmann was shot in the face by a suspect he’d stopped to question. He succumbed to his injury three days later.

Officer David W. Smith, 43

Johnson City New York Police Department

March 31, 2014 – Officer David Smith was shot and killed after responding to a disturbance call. He leaves behind his wife and one child.

Officer Gregg Maloney

Plymouth Massachusetts Police Department

April 1, 2014 – Officer Gregg Maloney was killed in a motorcycle crash while on patrol.

Deputy Sheriff Ernest T. Franklin, 58

Barren County Kentucky Sheriff’s Office

April 2, 2014 – Deputy Ernest Franklin was killed in a vehicle crash when his patrol car left the highway, struck an embankment, and then landed in a pond.
