Officer Phillip Meacham, 38

Hopkinsville Kentucky Police Department

March 29, 2018 – Officer Phillip Meacham was shot and killed by a man who was impersonating a police officer. The man then stole a truck and fled to nearby Clarksville, Tennessee, where he was was shot and killed during a confrontation with local officers and United States Marshals as they attempted to take him into custody.

Officer Meacham is survived by his wife and two young children.


Trooper First Class Kevin Miller, 49

Connecticut State Police

March 29, 2018 – Trooper Kevin Miller was killed when his patrol car collided with a tractor-trailer.

 

 

 


Special Agent Melissa S. Morrow, 48

United States Department of Justice – Federal Bureau of Investigation

March 22, 2018 – Special Agent Melissa Morrow, a 22-year veteran of the FBI, died as the result of brain cancer that she developed after participating in the search and recovery efforts at the Pentagon following the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks. She  spent ten weeks there recovering and processing evidence.

Agent Morrow is survived by her parents and sister.

Officer Andres Laza-Caraballo, 31

Juncos Municipal Police Department, Puerto Rico

March 21, 2018 – Officer Laza-Caraballo identified himself as a police officer and attempted to intervene when several men attacked the owner of a barber shop he was visiting. Immediately after, several of the subjects entered the shop with rifles and began shooting.

Officer Laza-Caraballo was able to return fire. He killed one of the men and wounded a second before being fatally shot. The other suspects remain at large.

Officer Laza-Caraballo is survived by his two children.

Officer Greggory Casillas, 30

Pomona California Police Department

March 9, 2018 – Officer Gregg Casillas was shot and killed as he attempted to arrest a subject who’d fled on foot following a car crash. The suspect ran into a nearby apartment and as Officer Casillas and another officer approached, the man fired through the apartment door, striking both officers.

Officer Casillas succumbed to his wounds after being transported to a local hospital. He is survived by his wife and two children.


Officer Scotty Hamilton

Pikeville Kentucky Police Department

March 13, 2018 –  Officer Scotty Hamilton was shot and killed as he and a Kentucky State Police trooper approached an empty, suspicious vehicle. They were searching the area for the occupants of the car, a known drug activity location, when a male suspect shot Officer Hamilton in head.

Officer Hamilton is survived by his wife and child.

Reserve Officer Chris Lawton, 41

Zachary Louisiana Police Department

March 12, 2018 – Reserve Officer Chris Lawton was intentionally struck and killed by a vehicle as he attempted to serve a narcotics-related warrant. The driver/suspect saw Officer Lawton approach the truck and started to drive, pinning the officer against a shopping cart corral.

Officer Lawton, a full-time firefighter with the Zachary Fire Department, served as a part-time, unpaid reserve officer.


Deputy Sheriff David Lee’Sean Manning, 24

Edgecombe County North Carolina Sheriff’s Office

March 11, 2018 – Deputy David Manning was killed in a vehicle crash while in pursuit of a car.

Deputy Manning is survived by his daughter, finance, parents, three brothers, two grandmothers, and a grandfather. He had served as a deputy for four months.


Deputy Sheriff Ryan Zirkle, 24

Marin County California Sheriff’s Office

March 15, 2018 – Deputy Ryan Zirkle was killed in a vehicle crash while responding to a 911 hangup call. He is survived by his fiancée, parents, and two brothers.

 

 

 

Sergeant Mark J. Baserman, 61

Pennsylvania Department of Corrections

On February 15, 2018, Sergeant Mark Baserman, a U.S Army veteran, was brutally attacked by an inmate as he sat at his desk in the housing unit day room. The prisoner who is serving a life sentence for murder, launched the attack after Sergeant Baserman removed a towel the inmate was using to block the view of his bunk.

The convicted murderer approached the officer’s desk and began punching him in the head. Once the sergeant fell to the floor, the inmate repeatedly kicked him in the head and face.

Sergeant Baserman was hospitalized but succumbed to the extensive injuries on February 26, 2018.


 

Officer Glenn Doss, Jr., 25

Detroit Michigan Police Department

January 28, 2018 – Officer Glenn Doss, Jr. succumbed to gunshot wound sustained four days earlier while responding to a domestic violence call. The shooter opened fire on Officer Doss, striking him in the head, before he was able to exit his patrol car.

Officer Doss is survived by his 9-month-old child, girlfriend, and parents.


 

Deputy Sheriff Daniel McCartney, 34

Pierce County Washington Sheriff’s Department

January 8, 2018 – Deputy Daniel McCartney was shot and killed during a foot pursuit of a burglary suspect. He is survived by his wife and three sons.

 

 


Officer Chris Beaudion, 26

Monroe Louisiana Police Department

January 7, 2018 – Officer Chris Beaudion was killed in a vehicle crash when his patrol car left the highway and struck a tree. He is survived by his wife, two children, and parents.

 

 

 


Lieutenant Christopher Robateau, 49

Jersey City New Jersey Police Department

January 5, 2018 – Lieutenant Christopher Robateau was struck and killed by a motorist as he checked on the well-being of person who’d just been involved in a car crash. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Deputy Constable Mark Diebold, 48

Tarrant County Texas Constable’s Office, Precinct 5

September 7, 2017 – Deputy Constable Mark Diebold suffered  fatal heart attack following tactical team qualifications.

Deputy Diebold, as some of you may recall, once stopped a speeding vehicle and discovered the driver was rushing his pregnant wife to the hospital. Instead of writing a traffic summons he activated his lights and siren and began to escort the couple. On the way, however, the husband pulled to the side of road because the baby decided to enter the world then and not wait to arrive at the hospital. So, Deputy Diebold and the husband together helped deliver a baby girl.

A year or so later, Deputy Diebold joined the young girl, the baby he helped deliver, at a tea party during her first birthday celebration.

Officer Bernie Domagala, 66

Chicago Police Department

September 5, 2017 – Officer Bernie Domagala succumbed to complications from a gunshot wound to the forehead he received during a standoff with a man, a former police officer, who’d been evicted from his home. The incident occurred in 1988. The shooter was found mentally incompetent to stand trial and was committed to a state mental hospital.

It was after years of confinement to a rehab facility and several surgeries that Officer Domagala lost his battle with the injuries. He is survived by his wife and three children.


Corporal Thomas Hannon, 42

Dover Delaware Police Department

September 1, 2017 – Corporal Thomas Hannon died from complications after surgery for an injury he received during a foot pursuit of a suspect. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Deputy Sheriff Robert French, 51

Sacramento County California Sheriff’s Department

August 30, 2017 – Deputy Robert French was shot and killed as he and other officers attempted to serve a search warrant for a Ramada Inn hotel room. The warrant service was part of an investigation into a stolen auto operation. When two California Highway Patrol officers knocked on the door a suspect inside opened fire with a rifle, wounding the two CHP officers. He then began firing from the balcony, killing Deputy French.

The suspect jumped from the balcony and managed to escape in a vehicle but crashed during a pursuit by officers. Once again, he began firing at officers but was wounded in the exchange of gunfire and was taken into custody.

Deputy French is survived by his children and grandchildren.


Sergeant Steve Perez, 60

Houston Texas Police Department

August 27, 2017 – Sergeant Steve Perez drowned during the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey after his patrol car was swept away by flood waters. His body was recovered by local citizens and the HPD dive team. Sergeant Perez is survived by his wife, two adult children, and father-in-law.

Lt. Aaron Allan

Lieutenant Aaron Allan, 38

Southport Indiana Police Department

July 27, 2017 – Lieutenant Aaron Allan responded to a rollover crash and as is typical of these calls, officers run toward the scene hoping to help or save victims. As Lt. Allan approached this one, though, one of the occupants of the vehicle opened fire striking him multiple times. A nearby witness says at least twenty rounds were fired.

Sadly, Lt. Allan succumbed to his wounds.

He leaves behind his wife and young son.

Lt. D. Heath Meyer

Lieutenant. D. Heath Meyer, 38

Oklahoma Highway Patrol

July 24, 2017 – Lieutenant D. Heath Meyer was struck and killed by a patrol car involved in a pursuit. He’d deployed stop sticks and as two patrol cars attempted to avoid the spike strips they collided. One of the two police vehicles then struck Lt. Meyer.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
