Deputy Sheriff Ben Zirbel, 40

Clay County Florida Sheriff’s Office

August 21, 2018 – Deputy Sheriff Ben Zirbel died as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash when a pickup truck towing a trailer turned in front of him, causing the accident. He’d remained on life support until his organs could be donated. He is survived by his wife and son.

Trooper Nicholas Clark

New York State Police

July 2, 2018 – Trooper Nicholas Clark was shot and killed when he and other officers responded to a 911 call regarding a suicidal suspect. The man’s wife placed the call stating that her husband, Bradford school Principal Steven Kiley, was indeed suicidal and was possibly armed. Negotiators were in the process of contacting the man when he opened fire, fatally wounding Trooper Clark.

Sheriff Jim Allard confirmed that Kiley was, at the time, barricaded inside his house with a firearm, and that two deputies arrived at the scene after troopers called for backup. One deputy was on the perimeter with Trooper Clark when he was shot. The deputy returned fire and then dragged the trooper to a position of cover.

The subject was found deceased a short time later. He’d died from a self inflicted gunshot wound.

Trooper Clark is survived by his parents and brother. He was a former high school state wrestling champion and had later tried out for the Buffalo Bills football team.

Deputy Sheriff Patrick Rohrer, 35

Wyandotte County Kansas Sheriff’s Office

June 15, 2018 – Deputy Sheriff Patrick Rohrer and Deputy Sheriff Theresa King were shot and killed while transporting a prisoner to the County Correction and Court Services Building. During the transport, the prisoner attacked them and was able to disarm one of the deputies and shot them both. One of the deputies managed to return fire and wounded the subject.

 


Deputy Sheriff Theresa King, 44

Wyandotte County Kansas Sheriff’s Office

June 15, 2018 – Deputy Sheriff Theresa King and Deputy Sheriff Patrick Rohrer and were shot and killed while transporting a prisoner to the County Correction and Court Services Building. During the transport, the prisoner attacked them and was able to disarm one of the deputies and shot them both. One of the deputies managed to return fire and wounded the subject.

She is survived by her three children.


Correctional Officer Tawanna Marin, 48

Florida Department of Corrections

June 18, 2018 – Correctional Officer Tawanna Marin was struck and killed while supervising an inmate work crew. The vehicle entered the highway and then struck her, causing her to become pinned between the car and a dump truck used by the work crew.

 

 

 

Collection Operations Manager Christopher Todd Bacon, 51

United States Department of Homeland Security, Office of Intelligence

June 7, 2018 – Collection Operations Manager Christopher Bacon was killed in a vehicle crash when his department vehicle struck the back of a tractor-trailer. He is survived by his wife and four children.

 

 


Officer Malcus Williams, II, 51

Ashland Oregon Police Department

March 2, 2018 – Officer Malcus Williams suffered a fatal heart attack after responding to a domestic violence call. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, and two sisters.

 

 

 


Sergeant Charles Salaway, 55

New York State Police

June 9, 2018 – Sergeant Charles Salaway died as the result of the cancer he developed following his participation in the search and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site following the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks. He is survived by his wife, three sons, and two daughters. His wife and one son both serve with the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office.

 

 

Trooper First Class Walter Greene, 51

Connecticut State Police

May 31, 2018 – Trooper First Class Walter Greene died from illnesses he contracted while participating in rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Trooper Greene and his canine had responded to the World Trade Center to search for possible survivors.


Officer Charles Irvine, Jr., 23

Milwaukee Wisconsin Police Department

June 7, 2018 – Officer Charles Irvine was killed in a crash while in pursuit of a fleeing vehicle. During the pursuit, Officer Irvine’s patrol car left the roadway and collided with a support wall of an overpass.

 

 

Senior Special Agent Paul Scott Ragsdale, 41

Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives

May 24, 2018 – Senior Special Agent Scott Ragsdale suffered a fatal heart attack while participating in arrest techniques training. He is survived by his wife and two children.

 

 

 


Special Agent in Charge David J. LeValley

Federal Bureau of Investigation

May 26, 2018 – Special Agent in Charge David LeValley died as the result of cancer he developed following his involvement in the search and rescue efforts immediately following the terrorist attacks on World Trade Center.

 

 


Chief of Detectives William Allee, 76

New York City Police Department

May 24, 2018 – Chief of Detectives William Allee died from illnesses he contracted while assisting in the rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site following the terrorist attacks. During his efforts he was exposed to and inhaled toxic materials. He developed leukemia as a direct result of contacting those materials.

 


Sergeant Daniel Baker, 32

Dickson County Tennessee Sheriff’s Office

May 30, 2018 – Sergeant Daniel Baker was shot and killed after responding to a call about a suspicious vehicle. After losing radio contact with Sergeant Baker, GPS was used to track his vehicle. Officers then discovered his body inside his patrol car.

Sergeant Baker is survived by his wife, children, and his father and stepbrother who also serve as law enforcement officers within the same department.


Tuco

Stephens County Oklahoma Sheriff’s Office

May 20, 2018 – Sadly, Tuco drowned while on the way to assist a stranded flood victim.

Deputy Matthew Brown and Tuco got caught in high flood waters, causing Deputy Brown to lose control of their vehicle at a low spot in the roadway. The car began to hydroplane and  then overturned into the high water. Then the underside caught fire.

Another deputy who was also en route to help the flood victim, saw the overturned patrol and stopped to save his fellow deputy who was trapped inside, along with Tuco who was secured in a K9 crate in the rear compartment of the vehicle. The deputy went under water and broke a window and freed Deputy Brown. The two immediately attempted to save Tuco, but the vehicle was partially submerged in water while the rest was fully engulfed in flames.

A memorial service was held in Tuco’s honor.

Officer Rogelio Santander, 27

Dallas Texas Police Department

April 25, 2018 – Officer Rogelio Santander succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained the previous day. As he and another officer attempted to handcuff a shoplifting suspect, the man produced a handgun and began firing. In addition to fatally wounding Officer Santtander, the shots also wounded the other Dallas officer and a loss prevention officer. Officer Santander passed away the next day.


Corporal Eugene Cole, 61

Somerset County Maine Sheriff’s Office

April 25, 2018 – Corporal Eugene Cole was shot and killed by a man who was out on bond for a previous weapons offense. After killing Deputy Cole, the suspect stole his police vehicle and then robbed a store. He later abandoned the patrol car and remains at large.

Corporal Cole is survived by his son, who also serves with the sheriff’s office.


Detective Sergeant Brian Cuscino, 44

New Castle Pennsylvania Police Department

April 19, 2018 – Detective Sergeant Brian Cuscino suffered a fatal heart attack while participating in the department’s mandatory physical fitness program. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

 

 


Officer Tamby Yagan, 41

Paterson New Jersey Police Department

April 22, 2018 – Officer Tamby Yagan was killed when his patrol car collided with another vehicle. He is survived by his son.

 

 

 


Deputy Sheriff Casey Shoemate, 26

Miller County Missouri Sheriff’s Office

April 20, 2018 – Deputy Casey Shoemate was killed in a head-on vehicle crash while responding to a structure fire. He is survived by his two children, fiancee, parents, and several siblings.

Deputy Sheriff Taylor Lindsey, 25

Gilchrist County Florida Sheriff’s Office

April 19, 2018 – Deputy Sheriff Taylor Lindsey and Sergeant Noel Ramirez were shot and killed from ambush as they took their lunch break in a local restaurant.

 

 

 


Sergeant Noel Ramirez, 29

Gilchrist County Florida Sheriff’s Office

April 19, 2018 – Sergeant Noel Ramirez and Deputy Sheriff Taylor Lindsey were shot and killed from ambush as they took their lunch break in a local restaurant.

He is survived by his wife and two children.

Officer Sean Gannon, 32

Yarmouth Massachusetts Police Department

April 12, 2018 – Officer Sean Gannon was shot and killed while he and his K-9 assisted with the search of a residence for a wanted man.

Officer Gannon located the suspect in a closet at which time the man opened fire fatally wounding Officer Gannon and wounding Nero, the police K-9.

 


Patrolman Kevin Crossley, 34

Whitesboro New York Police Department

April 11, 2018 – Patrolman Kevin Crossley was killed in a vehicle crash when a car traveling in the opposite direction made a sudden left turn in front of his patrol car, causing the crash.

Patrolman Crossley is survived by his parents and brother.

 

 


Officer Keith Earle, 46

Huntsville Alabama Police Department

April 9, 2018 – Officer Keith Earle succumbed to injuries sustained in a vehicle crash on March 26th. He’d remained in the hospital until passing away.

 

 

 

Corporal Dale Hallman, 30

Saluda County South Carolina Sheriff’s Office

April 6, 2018 – Corporal Dale Hallman was killed in a single-vehicle crash while en route to assist in a search for a person who’d fled into a wooded area. He was on his way to the scene to provide K9 support when the crash occurred.

Corporal Hallman is survived by his expectant wife and two children.
